Ray Legere is a Master fiddler, mandolin & guitar player as well as an award winning Bluegrass player. He is continuously recruited to play alongside major recording artists, both on recordings and on tour. He has been touring worldwide with the Bowfire show for many years. To have him play in the intimate setting of a house concert, will be a truly phenomenal experience.

Ray will be playing alongside Michael O'Reilly, who is himself, a guitar, banjo and mandolin player. His original story songs will be featured.

There is nothing like listening to fiddle music in an intimate environment like this, so please do come and join us!

The Bollox (!) - digitally re-releases album

Not one day from giving notice that The Mahones are playing Ottawa, do I receive yet another 'Celtic-punk' piece of news. I found this band on iTunes and gave the tune samples a listen. Actually, this band is pretty good. I recommend them to the young and the progressive out there who want another angle on the old music.

My own introduction to traditional music appreciation was through modern bands like Figgy Duff, Rawlins Cross and then, thankfully, seeing Paddy Keenan live in a St. John's pub as he was re-establshing his recording career with Na Keen Affair. In this respect, we need to accept that music which is not strictly in the tradition may be a 'gateway drug' to the harder stuff (more traditional that is) for the younger crowd. And we need the younger crowd to buy in to help keep it alive.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Celtic punk rock band, The Bollox, digitally re-releases album.

February 5th, 2012 -- After more than a year of being unavailable for digital purchase, Celtic punk rock band The Bollox re-releases their self titled album on all major online music retailers. First released in March of 2009, the album contains 11 songs that capture the spirit and energy of Ireland through the eyes of an Irish immigrant. It received rapturous reviews and an outstanding response from the general public.

The album was co-written by members Keith Walker (also from the bands Power of Dreams and Sister Cities) and Jason Devore (also from the band Authority Zero). One year after the release of the album, members of The Bollox went their separate ways due to commitments with other music projects. As a result the album was no longer available online for purchase. Due to overwhelming demand for the album to be re-released, Walker and Devore decided it was time to make it available once again.

"Jason and I are very proud of this album and we hope it reaches fans of Celtic, folk, and punk music far and wide." says Walker.

JESSE SMITH (FIDDLE), a young American musician who grew up in Baltimore immersed in the thriving Irish music tradition of that city, has lived in Ireland for over thirteen years now. Both of his parents are musicians and he started playing the fiddle at an early age, studying with the renowned teacher and player Brendan Mulvihill. In 1998 his love for the music took him to Ireland to stay, where he made his mark as a fiddler touring and recording with the great Irish band Danú.

His debut solo fiddle CD Jigs and Reels was among the top ten Irish traditional music CDs cited by music columnist Earle Hitchner in America's largest Irish weekly, "The Irish Echo". This was followed by a collaborative release (with Belfast flute player Harry Bradley and London guitarist/pianist John Blake) entitled The Tap Room Trio, simply one of the best recordings of Irish traditional music in recent years.

Praise is now being garnered by his recent release, The Ewe With The Crooked Horn (2010), recorded with button-accordionist Colm Gannon.

Singer/Guitarist Ryan McGiver has toured extensively throughout the US, Asia, Australia and Europe over the past decade playing a mixture of traditional Irish and American music.

In addition to performing across the globe, Ryan has taught traditional guitar workshops domestically and internationally including the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia.

He has recorded and shared stages with a diverse and eclectic mix of traditional, folk and rock musicians including Kevin Crawford, Liz and Yvonne Kane, Doug Wieselman, Edel Fox, Jolie Holland and Shahzad Ismaily to name a few.

Ryan is the guitarist for Grammy award-winning singer, Susan McKeown and is currently touring with Lunasa's uilleann piper, Cillian Vallely.

His debut solo album of ballads, Troubled In Mind, is garnishing critical acclaim in both the traditional and Indie-folk communities world-wide and is set to release in spring 2012.

All workshops are an hour long and $20 per participant.

'Traddy punk' group The Mahones to play Ottawa, 17 Feb 2012

This gig will more than likely appeal more to the younger crowd in Ottawa. I gather from my Twitter feed that Canadian Celtic-Punk sensation The Mahones are playing on Friday 17 Feb at Mavericks Bar on Rideau St., although the gig does not appear yet on their event listing, it does appear on the Mahones Tour Schedule. Digging into their tour listing, the band certainly gets around the world and obviously have a huge following. I myself haven't owned any of their music, and I always have a hard time listening to most 'Celtic-punk' bands that aren't The Pogues. But that's just ME. I should probably go through their back catalog and give them a solid chance. Only fair huh? Anyways, if you want a rollicking jolly time rocking out to Irish influenced punk rock, Mavericks will be THE place to be on 17 Feb.

Shane has distinguished himself as a master of an array of fiddle styles ranging from Irish and Scottish to French-Canadian, Texan, and Bluegrass. He is one of Canada's most highly awarded Canadian Old-Time fiddlers, a three-time Canadian Open National Fiddle Champion, a three-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, a Grand North American Fiddle Champion and is the only Canadian to have ever won the US Grand National Fiddle Championship.

In concert, Shane captivates audiences with his danceable playing that is as adventurous as it is technically thrilling. He has toured Canada, United States, Germany, England, China and Taiwan, and has performed with several orchestras. Irish Fiddle immersion weekend - January 27-29, $125 (includes concert)

Patrick Ourceau is a virtuoso on the fiddle, an avid student of the old masters, and a particular specialist in the style and repertoire of Clare and East Galway.

The usual reminder, a house is just a house and only holds so many (about 45, with many seats taken by the workshop musicians) and our house concerts normally sell out - reserve early.

The $125 immersion covers classes all day Saturday, concert and session Saturday night, and a half-day class on Sunday.

Since moving to North America, Patrick Ourceau has performed with many U.S.-based musicians, including the legendary accordion players James Keane and Paddy O'Brien, concertina wizard John Williams, and the band Celtic Thunder. In June 1999, Patrick joined the Tulla Céilí Band on their last U.S. tour, and for the three years performed regularly with former Tulla Céilí Band accordion player Andrew McNamara. In recent years, however, Patrick's main concert partner was Gearóid ÓhAllmhuráin, a renowned County Clare concertina player now living in Montreal. Together with Gearóid, Patrick performed in concert and at festivals all across Europe and North America. In 1999, they released Tracin', a critically acclaimed duet recording faithful to the style and repertoire of the older generation of traditional musicians in Clare and East Galway. The Almonte Celtfest Committee is sponsoring a fundraiser bonspiel on January 14 to support the Almonte Celtfest. This is a fun curling event that is limited to 16 teams. The cost is $80 / team or $20 per player. If you do not have a team, let us know and we can slot you into a team.

The location is the Almonte Curling Rink. It starts at 10:30 am and ends about 6:00pm. Each team is guaranteed 3 games. All skill level are welcome! The event will also include Celtic entertainment, so if you are musician, bring your instrument(s).

The Stairwell Carollers are a charitable a cappella Ottawa choir, who sing sacred and secular renaissance music, as well as settings of traditional and contemporary Christmas carols.

Winner of the 2010 OMFA provincial competition, this non-profit group has raised over $40,000 for local Ottawa/Gatineau charities,through the sale of concert tickets, CDs and cookbooks.

Recently winning 2nd place in the National Music Festival 2010, they are now ranked amongst the best of Canada's choirs.

Written by Holly Massie, one of the founding members, this Blog trains a magnifying glass on the 35 year life of our charitable choir, The Stairwell Carollers.

Meet the Master - Paddy Keenan Whistle and Piping Workshop

Irish Music Ottawa offers an opportunity for musicians of ALL levels of proficiency on the Irish tin whistle, including low whistles, and/or uilleann pipes, to meet and learn from Paddy Keenan.

I've heard that you should never meet your heros, as you'll only be disappointed. Come meet Paddy Keenan in person and find out why that doesn't apply to him. You will not be disappointed!

This workshop is offered on the day after the Paddy Keenan concert (26 Nov) at the organiser's house (Nepean, 27 Nov). Based on the workshop Paddy gave in 2008, the atmosphere is very relaxed and it was a lot of fun. The people at the last workshop really enjoyed themselves as Paddy is tremendously supportive and respectful of musicians at ALL levels. He is simply one of the most genuine guys you will ever meet. He will work with you at your level.

The cost for the workshop is $30 for 2-3 hrs (we're casual!) with Paddy Keenan, his and your instruments! Limited to FIRST TEN registrants. Target start time is 2pm. Location details etc will be confirmed with registrants in advance. Your registration includes light refreshments and a memorable experience with the living legend!

Almonte Celtfest joins Irish Music Ottawa supporters for Paddy Keenan Concert!

I would like to catch up on some recent news that the Almonte Celtfest has agreed to come on board for promotion of the Paddy Keenan concert, 26 November 2011. The Almonte Celtfest has earned credibility as a professionally organised showcase for Celtic music, dance, and craft, sourced mainly from talent within the Ottawa Valley and its environs. They also bring in 'outside' talent which only adds to the excitement. Admission to the Celtfest is by donation, and this makes it an incredible family-oriented event suitable for all budgets. Located in the beautiful Gemmill Park in Almonte, Ontario, the park provides an incredible naturally amphitheatre giving good acoustics and sightlines. It's a festival that you don't want to miss, and I am incredibly pleased that they are supporting the Paddy Keenan concert.

Not only does the Almonte Celtfest put on the annual festival, but throughout the year they host concerts within Almonte in support of their community activities. This last weekend I joined a full house of enthusiastic music and storytelling fans for the McGee Band's accompaniment for professor David Wilson's presentation of his latest book , Vol 2 in a series, on the life and time of the famous Irish-Canadian parliamentarian, "Thomas D'arcy McGee, the Extreme Moderate." This show exceeded my already heightened expectations in terms of an interweaving of new traditional music written in the traditional Irish style (James Stephens and Frank Cassidy, composers) and in-character readings from professor Wilson's book. Canadian history never sounded so good, EVER!

Wow, 35 years! It's way before I got to Ottawa, so I'm afraid I don't have any comedic stories about the first time I walked in to the OFC and accidentally stepped on Bruce Cockburn's toes, but any business that lasts 35 years is obviously doing something right.

The concert is a celebration of music and community with an all-star lineup including Terry Gillespie, Ana Miura, Sheesham and Lotus, Jesse Greene and harp sensation Marc Seguin, Folk legend Doug McArthur, Alicia Borisonik, Don Gibbons, Missy Burgess, the Bytown Ukulele Group (BUG), local clawhammer banjo legends Mary Gick, Paul Hornbeck and Anne Downey, the OFC Choir "Folka Voca", OFC Jazz Bands, Arthur McGregor and Wendy Moore, Piping celebrity Ross Davison, Sarah Ross and several special guest appearances. Until the concert is past, the main Irish Music Ottawa webpage will tease you with information about the Paddy Keenan concert on 26 November, at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Ave, about 1 km west of Westboro Village. The webpage will direct you to the ONLINE ticket sales, which are heavily discounted compared to the 'At the Door' price of $25. I encourage you to buy the advance tickets (way better for my stress!). Students have it really good this time, at only $15 (and IMO absorbs the transaction fees). Also, if you have kids 12 and younger, they get in for FREE. The concert space is quite nice, and it's a formal concert, so all concert goers will appreciate parental control over your excited kids while the music is playing. I just thought it was time to encourage young kids to hear some great live Irish traditional music, and as a side benefit give the parents a break from arranging and paying for babysitters. I have tried in the past to arrange food and drinks for the break during the concert, but to make a long story short, it's difficult, so make sure you have a meal beforehand. You brain will be firing on all cylinders once Paddy fires up 'the octopus' and Irish whistles - you're going to need the energy.

I can't stress enough that Irish Music Ottawa is a not-for-profit and entirely volunteer driven endeavour. These concerts cost 'real money,' and I strive to bring you top notch entertainment within my humble means. I hope that you will help me spread the word about attending this fantastic evening of Irish traditional music, song, and humour. Successful concerts breed MORE concerts. I can't be any more honest with you than that. It's really that simple.

Well folks, it's finally official, the accompaniment for the Irish Music Ottawa Paddy Keenan concert, 26 Nov, First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, will be Andy Hillhouse! Andy did a stellar job playing with Pierre Schryer in Ottawa in 2009. His talents on vocal and guitar playing were a definite crowd pleaser for which I received many positive comments afterwards. ...from touring Mexico playing Mariachi music, to performing on main stages at major folk festivals, to singing as a soloist in European cathedrals. He is the founder of the popular Canadian celtic funk band Mad Pudding, played with the innovative fiddler Jaime RT (their latest duo CD "Spark" nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award), and provided the driving rhythm guitar behind The McDades (whose latest CD "Bloom", on which he played, has won two Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Juno Award for Best Folk/Traditional Group) from 2005-2007. Andy was a member of the Juno-nominated vocal collective Musica Intima from 1994-2005, is former director of the Universal Gospel Choir (1993-1999), and has directed the Youth & Concert choirs at the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach. Andy has taught workshops on Celtic guitar for the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, the Sunshine Coast Summer School of Celtic Music, and the Saltspring Fiddle Camp. He has been on the faculty of Vancouver Community College. He currently plays regularly with Pierre Schryer, one of Canada's finest fiddlers.

Andy plays tenor banjo and the cavaquinho and is currently studying Brazilian percussion with Alan Hetherington as part of the Toronto Escola de Samba. He takes fiddle lessons from Patrick Orceau.

Popping with glorious, bright colour and off-colour jokes, The Guard is an Irish comedy and almost incidental thriller, though mostly it’s something of a bait and switch. The tasty bait (and reluctant buddies) are Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, two of the best utility players in contemporary English-language cinema. Alone or together, they can be reason to see any movie. Even when they’ve been self-consciously set off against each other for maximum quirk, as they are here, these are performers who can dig a little deeper than their material. The Makem and Spain Brothers, the powerhouse Irish vocal group of their generation, are returning to Ottawa for another rousing concert.

It was 50 years ago this year that the Makem Brothers' legendary father Tommy hit the big time with the Clancy Brothers, bursting onto the North American scene with their record-breaking appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The folk scene would never be the same as Ireland's fab four dominated Irish music in the 1960's with their rousing songs of rebellion, drinking, fun and mischief. Their influence continues to this day.

Today, Shane, Conor and Rory Makem, teamed with Mickey and Liam Spain, are keeping the song tradition alive. They are roaring out their own compelling versions of boisterous Clancy/Makemclassics, while bringing superb new songs of their own to the fore. Their live performances have been described as a wall of sound, enchanting audiences across North America and Ireland.

Friday Night - There will be a session/siamsa at BEN'S PUB Street in downtown Kingston (please note that it no longer is at the RCHA Club). It will run from 7:00 to 11:00 or so. A group of us will be having dinner at Ben's Pub - 105 Clergy Street East (Good reasonably priced pub grub) at 6:00 but you can get food there up until about 9. Steafan Hannigan will be there to help lead the session.

Accommodation has been arranged at the Peachtree Inn 1187 Princess Street at a discounted rate of $79 + tax. You must ask for the CCE rate to get the discount. They will only hold this rate until October 1 so you should book right away. They have said that if there are lots of rooms available after the first they will still honour the discount but they will not guarantee to. To avoid missing out you should book right away. There are other hotels in the area but they are all over $100. The Peachtree is clean and comfortable and close to the seniors' centre. We use it for the Irish Language Weekend. They serve a complimentary continental breakfast as well. I would recommend using Expedia or another internet booking service if you don't want to stay at the Peachtree. The Travelodge (moderate price) and Best Western Fireside Inn (more expensive) are good facilities in the area.

Saturday - All events are at the Seniors Centre at 56 Francis Street.

We will have an attitude adjustment/personality development break with a cash bar (beer and wine) from 5:30 to 6:00.

Dinner will be from 6:00 to 7:15 at the seniors centre. Delegates, East Region Executive and the award recipients will be complimentary. All others will be charged $25 ($20 for Comhaltas members).

We plan on making the 60th anniversary awards presentations between 7:15 and 8:00 so as not to interfere with the ceili. There are a lot of awards so we felt that it would be better to have the presentation as part of the dinner. It is our regular ceili night and to take an hour out of it for the awards could put a damper on the ceili for non-Comhaltas members who regularly attend our ceilis. The dinner will be a more intimate setting anyway in our groups opinion. Anne McConnell-Strong invited the Irish Ambassador to present the awards and he has accepted.

The ceili will go from 8 to 11:00 or 11:30 and admission is $10 ($8 for Comhaltas members). Steafan & Saskia will provide the music along with any other musicians who would like to play with them and are comfortable playing for dancers.

Please note that the dinner charge does not include admission to the ceili. There will be separate tickets for each.

The main thing we need to know as soon as possible is numbers for the dinner. The seniors centre will need fairly definite numbers by the 10th or 11th so people need to commit prior to that date. We can accommodate about 100 for dinner in the dining room and there will be some additional standing room if people are going to come just for the awards. If you are going to come for the dinner, please confirm with Julie or myself at bowesjulie@sympatico.ca ASAP so we can hold a place for you before we reach capacity.

This will be a great weekend with lots of music, dance, workshops and the opportunity to help continue the work of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, so plan on attending and please spread the word to members of your group and particularly to the recipients of the award!!

Irish Music Ottawa presents: Paddy Keenan - 26 November 2011

Irish Music Ottawa is pleased to present the legendary uillean piper Paddy Keenan, on the evening of Saturday 26 November at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Ave (about 1 km west of Westboro Village). Paddy Keenan, the renowned masterful piper in the famous Bothy Band, has for many years now been on a successful solo career, touring the world over. Originally from born in Trim, Co. Meath, Paddy now calls a farm somewhere in New Hampshire his home away from Ireland. Paddy is often backed by a guest musician to round out the piping. At this time, the guest musician is being determined.

For those that are familiar with Paddy Keenan (and MANY are) they also know that he is an amazing whistle player, and one of the earliest players of the modern Irish 'low whistle.' Among his many accolades, Paddy was the 2002 Irish National Traditional Musician of the Year, and award winner for the 2010 Irish Musicians Association. Paddy's cds are available from Ossian USA.

Many people who attended Paddy's last show in Ottawa have since told me it was the highlight of their Irish music year. A fantastic show of masterful playing, humour, and song. Really, you won't want to miss this concert.

Violon Trad Québec offers a master class in a weekend format for his first time! On September 23rd, 24th and 25th 2011, renowned Irish fiddle master Patrick Ourceau will come teach, share his knowledge and passion in Quebec.

Patrick Ourceau was born in France, where he discovered and started to play Irish music. In 1989 he emigrated to NYC and since 2005 has been living in Toronto. Mostly self-taught, Patrick's style was influenced early on by the discovery of the music of the legendary fiddle players Paddy Canny, Bobby Casey and Paddy Fahey.

Since the mid-eighties, Patrick has been regularly visiting Ireland and especially County Clare where he had the honor of learning directly from the masters Paddy Canny and Peter O'Loughlin. Since the mid-nineties Patrick has toured extensively and has been featured on a host of recordings.

He is in great demand as a teacher and regularly teaches both privately and at various festivals and summer schools across North America, Ireland and Mainland Europe.

TradConnect - a social network for Irish traditional music lovers!

TradConnect was launched in April 2011 and is a new social network for people who play, listen to and enjoy traditional Irish music. With close to 1,000 members, the aim of the site is to connect people that are learning and playing traditional Irish music with other players in their area.

Irish traditional music has always been about meeting up and playing music with other musicians. For many people the local pub session is viewed as the starting point in meeting other musicians. However in many areas there is no weekly session. Joining these sessions for a lot of people can be too daunting an experience. You may not know the tunes, the speed might be too fast or you may not be welcome. Alternatively you may be an advanced player and may be frustrated with the quality of these sessions. Some can be great and many can be average at best. This frustrates a lot of musicians with the result being that there are thousands that do not go out and play.

TradConnect supports the ideas that you only need a couple of musicians in order to get something started. Once you have two or three likeminded musicians you can get your sets of tunes together, practice, socialise and maybe start a weekly session. This can be in your house, in your local pub, at parties or whenever or wherever you want. When you have three musicians you may decide to add a forth or fifth member. Then things can take off and others find you and join. Over time you build up a group of players. You do it your way, at your level and in your own time.

Celebrate Vermont's Celtic and French-Canadian roots at the 19th annual New World Festival in Randolph, Vermont, Sunday September 4, 2011. In 2007 I attended the 15th event, and a little review is here. This is a really fun festival. You buy a pass, and you basically get the run of attending as many gigs as you please in the town, which is basically shutdown to traffic for the full 12 hours. This year they have 6 stages running. Some of the stages are in local churches, or in the wonderful Chandler music hall. Food is all local, beer and wine from Vermont producers, , children's activities, and work from Vermont artisans. Musician's recordings are sold at a central point in the town. If you want a great weekend getaway across the border, I really recommend this festival.

The Atlantic Voices Choral Composition Contest 2011 Atlantic Voices: The Newfoundland and Labrador Choir of Ottawa is a mixed-voice (SATB) community choir that sings music from and about Atlantic Canada. This is our second Choral Composition Contest, and the choir is looking for quality choral music with an East Coast flavour. We are offering two prizes, a 1st prize of $500 and a 2nd prize of $200, for original choral works by Canadian composers. The winning works will be programmed on Atlantic Voices' spring 2012 concert. This competition is open to all residents of Canada, of all backgrounds and all ages. Note: the winning entrant need not have a particular connection to the Atlantic region.

Contest entries must be received electronically or postmarked no later than October 31st, 2011. Late submissions will not be accepted. Changes or modifications to any submitted score will be accepted until midnight on the closing day of the contest, October 31, 2011.

Prayers urgently needed...

My sister's son-in-law, Rob Hilliard, is in the Intensive Care Unit at the General Hospital with a very severe case of septisemia. This has come on very suddenly and his chances of survival are low. He is being treated with massive doses of antibiotics but so far he has not started to respond and there is nothing more that can be done to help him except to pray. He is 37 years old and he and Jenn have three young children. Please pray for his recovery and for the family who are going through an incredibly difficult time right now.

The Ottawa Celtic Choir is starting its 4th season this fall. We encourage anyone with an interest in singing Celtic songs to come out and join - all are welcome. The choir sings songs from all seven Celtic nations, in various Celtic languages, English, French and in the Galician dialect. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday nights, 7pm to 9pm, at St. John the Evangelist Church, on the corner of Elgin and Somerset Streets. Naismith's Celtic Jam - Day change

Because of a request from the owner at Naismith's Pub in Almonte, we are going to change the regular weekly Celtic Jam from Thursday to Wednesday.

So starting on Wednesday, September 07 at 7:30, there will be a weekly Celtic and other music jam session at Naismith's Pub in Almonte. There is no cost to this jam. This open session welcomes anyone who likes to play Celtic music in public in a pub environment.

The jam at Naismith continues on Thursday night for August.

The Ottawa Contra Dance schedule is now posted for 2011-2012. Here is some stolen text from their excellent webpage for those who are unfamiliar with Contra Dance:

Contra is a fun form of community dance where you begin and finish one dance (about 10min) with the same partner, progressing up and down the hall in long lines while you dance with different sets of other couples, repeating a sequence of moves guided by the caller. Essentially it's lots of fun AND excellent exercise. To see videos of what contra dancing looks like in Ottawa, click here.

NOTE: OCBS will be playing a set during the fiddle concert on Saturday afternoon at the Games between 2:30 and 3pm. Please try to be there and ready to tune up by 2:15. The sets played will be 36 and 6. Check with Brian MacLean for more info. Ernie asks that you try to manage without sheet music if you can.

July 29-30—Glengarry Highland Games: Loads of great Scottish and Cape Breton music at the games this year! The Barra MacNeils will be headlining the Friday Concert and Tattoo. Scottish Fiddling is a two-day event starting with the "Young Fiddlers' Showcase" on Friday afternoon in the air-conditioned Fiddlers' Hall in the arena. The show starts at 2:00 pm and will feature young musicians from Glengarry and surrounding area. The afternoon will conclude with a performance by the Massed Fiddlers at 5:30 pm as they warm-up before taking to the main stage where they will perform at 6:15 pm in the Pre-Games Tattoo . On Saturday morning in the Fiddlers' Hall of the arena, there will be two Scottish fiddle workshops. This year we welcome well known and popular Nova Scotian fiddler, Stan Chapman. He has taught the Cape Breton Fiddle Style to many students through private lessons; in addition, he has done workshops in both Canada and the U.S. and summer sessions at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts in St. Ann's, Cape Breton. He has conducted fiddle groups including the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association and is currently a part time Lecturer in Heritage and Culture at Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S.. Fiddlers are invited to bring their fiddles and music stands and take an active part in one or both sessions ( 9 am and 10:15 am). Scottish fiddling will continue in the arena hall on Saturday afternoon. The Glengarry Strathspey & Reel Society will open the program at 2:00 pm and from then until the massed fiddlers at closing, you will be able to tap your toes and clap your hands to the traditional music of Glengarry. How to Host a House Session: All you need is a space big enough to put 6-8 fiddlers in, some chairs without arms, and a willingness to listen to the same tune played over and over again as we practice. If you have a piano let us know, otherwise we'll bring our own keyboard. We can also bring folding chairs. CCE Ottawa has renewed the rental for the use of the hall at Blessed Sacrament, 4th Street, Ottawa, again this year. This comes after some turmoil at the church which put the ceili at some risk for a non-renewal.

The first ceili of the year will be Saturday, September 17.

All workshops are 1 1/2 hours and will be held between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Please register at the Old Town Hall before 11:15 – room locations will be provided at that time. We intend to hold all workshops within the Old Town Hall except for piano, which will be at the Mississippi Mills MusicWorks (we will give you directions at registration)

Fee is $20 cash or cheque (payable to Almonte Celtfest) at registration

While not necessarily intermediate, the workshops are intended for those who are familiar with their instruments and have mastered basic fingering and/or chording patterns, know some tunes, and would not be completely intimidated or uncomfortable playing with others in a slow jam. The intent of the workshops is to allow participants to hone the skills they have, pick up some new tips that will their improve playing, and possibly learn a new tune or two. The workshops being offered this year are listed below with their instructors, many of those being well-known to Valley Celtic musicians.

Irish Style Fiddle with Matt Pepin. Matt is well known to the Ottawa Valley traditional music scene having performed at Celtfest and regional events many times and through teaching fiddle at the Ottawa Folklore Centre and the Ottawa Valley School of Traditional Music in Almonte. Matt has toured extensively outside of Ontario, notably in Newfoundland and Ireland. Matt's fiddle playing blends traditional Irish and Scottish with his Old-Time, Valley, and Québecois roots to create a refreshing style of his own, which can be heard on his CD Pass It Down.

Cape Breton Style Fiddle with Don Fletcher. Don has been playing fiddle for over 25 years and enjoys many styles including Cape Breton, Irish, Québecois, and Bluegrass, and also teaches these styles. Don's playing is influenced by Jerry Holland, Howie McDonald, Liz Carroll, Jim Van Cleve, André Brunet, to name a few. He has been taught by many well-known fiddlers including Pierre and Louis Schryer, Denis Lanctot, Jerry Holland, JP Cormier, and Alasdair Fraser. Don is a regular at the many sessions held in and around the Ottawa area.

Piano Accompaniment with Jim Hunter. Jim is a well-known session piano player in Ottawa and began chording as a kid when the world was a lot younger. Over the years Jim has played piano accompaniment with many local Canadian and Celtic fiddlers and groups including the Ottawa Fiddle Ensemble, the Ottawa Comhaltas Ceili Band, the Dunvegan Ceilidh Band, the Valley Stompers, and the Sarah Burnell Band.

Bodhran & Bones with Alistair Dennett. Alistair spent 25 years in Winnipeg where he was involved with organizing their annual Irish Fest. During that time he learned to play the bodhran, bones, and other percussion instruments and played in various traditional folk bands such as Meadowlark, Marty's Party, Skruj McDuk, and The Duks. He also taught the bodhran privately and at various music camps, and also built drums and invented a single key tunable bodhran. Alistair continues to teach in Ottawa and also plays the drums with various artists around the city including Ball and Chain, Sneezy Waters, Keith Glass (Prairie Oyster/Lynn Miles) and Pat Moore's Vinyl Frontier.

Whistle & Flute with Chuck Quick. Chuck has a love of Celtic music and plays the whistle, wooden flute, and uilleann pipes with several Brockville groups includingFiddlers Plus and Avalon who perform regularly at community and related events in that area. He has taught whistle to seniors at St. Lawrence College in Brockville several times as a part of their Encore Programme.

Irish/Celtic Harp with Clare Dwyer. Clare grew up with Irish music and has been playing Irish and other Celtic music on the harp for many years. In addition to traditional music, step-dancing is also in the family and Clare has studied dance with the Canadian dance master, Gilles Roy. She is also well known in the region for generously hosting her house concerts throughout the year featuring Irish, U.S., and Canadian artists in all forms of Celtic music from fiddle to song. Clare recently spent a year in the Galway area, Ireland, where she studied both Irish harp and Sean Nos style step-dance.

My thanks to Ballroom Dance Reviews for linking to the blog, here. The common theme here I suppose is the love of dancing in traditional forms. In our case, Irish set and step dancing, and theirs in traditional ballroom dancing! Well, it's all dance music.

Martin Nolan and Chuck Hart - House Concert and Workshops

House Concert and workshops Sunday July 3rd with Martin Nolan (Whistle/Pipes) and Chuck Hart (Guitar/Fiddle/Mandolin).

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Martin took his first lessons from John Keenan Senior, father of well-known piper Paddy Keenan. http://www.martinnolan.com/ .

He is currently a member of the band IONA.

Chuck Hart from Ottawa is a singer-songwriter and traditional musician, and has been playing, writing and performing music of diverse influences for more than 30 years. Chuck has an enduring passion for the dance music of Ireland.

Singer-songwriter and traditional musician, Chuck has been playing, writing and performing music of diverse influences for more than 30 years. He started out on guitar in the '60s, took up the mandolin in the '70s, then answered the fiddle's call in the early '80s to pursue an enduring passion for the dance music of Ireland.

Over the years Chuck has honed his craft at innumerable sessions, played with several ceili and contra dance bands, and appeared at folk festivals and clubs in Canada, the US and the UK. Wherever he goes Chuck builds musical connections and thrives on the exchange of ideas that fuel creativity and keep tradition alive, all the while continuing to explore more individual terrain through his own compositions.

Naismiths Thursday Night Celtic Jam - Continues through the summer

The Naismith Thursday Night Celtic Jam will continue through the summer. The music session has been popular and the musicians asked to keep it going over July and August.

So, a Celtic music session takes place every Thursday night at Naismith`s Pub in Almonte.

Almonte Celtfest 2011 Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary

Come to the 15th Annual Almonte Celtfest, July 8 to 10 and celebrate with us the great traditional and contemporary music, song and dance of the Ottawa Valley region. Discover your "inner Celt " !

This year's event literally is bigger and better. It is a tribute to all of the performers, volunteers and supporters who have made Celtfest possible over the past 15 years.

Celtfest 2011 kicks off Friday July 8th evening with music in Almonte and Carleton Place pubs. On Saturday a new expanded format sees music at the Farmers Market at 9:00 am, workshops at the Old Town Hall at 11:30 a.m and for the first time ever, Main Stage concerts in the outstanding natural atmosphere of Almonte's Gemmill Park commencing at 2:00 pm and ending at dusk. Saturday's excellent performers are The Cape Breton Fiddlers, The Boxty Band, The Barley Shakers, Julie Fitzgerald & Friends, Brandy N Port, Wade Foster, Salty Dog and headliners, The Rogues who in 2010 won a "battle of the celtic bands" event over 64 other bands, in the USA.

On Sunday July 10 Celfest commences with the Fiddle Mass at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church at 10:30 am and at 12 noon on the Main Stage, outstanding performances by Monday Night Fiddlers, Les mots dits Anglais, Dai Bassett, Triple Trouble, Corkery Road, Heather Dale Band, the Celtfest Friends tribute to the 15th Anniversary, and headliners The Rogues.

Celtfest 2011 also features an excellent artisans and food village, the O'Connell Acoustic Session Tent and the little Celts children's area. Over these three days Almonte Celtfest showcases an amazing collection of Ottawa Valley and Canadian Celtic talent in a celebration of the Valley spirit that's not to be missed. The 5th annual Russell CelticFest is next weekend, June 18th, 2011, 24 Legion Lane, Russell Ontario.

Brandy 'N' Port
The band Brandy 'N' Port was born in April, 1987. The founding members are Alec Long, Paddy Maher and Danny Byrne. Today's line up is Alec Long, Al Wilmore, Seamus Costello & Danny Byrne. The band's philosophy is still the same as when it was formed, to play music that appeals to the masses while sticking to their Celtic roots. Whether it be a quaint Irish Pub or a dance for 3000 people Brandy 'N' Port has mastered the stage.

Corkery Road
Corkery Road is a four-piece Celtic band that specializes in high-energy, infectious, traditional music. With a repertoire ranging from familiar pub songs to wild and dramatic historic tales, Corkery Road offers music that is sure to please even the most diverse audience. Slip back in time through melodies that shaped our heritage. Hear the voices of the far-flung Celtic peoples who shaped this land, from Newfoundland to the Ottawa Valley. Listen to stories of whaling, logging, emigration, pining for home, and having a good time in the midst of hardships.

The Runes featuring Ruth Sutherland
The Runes is a celtic musical group featuring celtic harper/singer/songwriter Ruth Sutherland, multi-instrumentalist/blues harper/singer/songwriter Doug Feaver, and celtic fiddler Stephen Fuller. Ambient and thoroughly entertaining, the combination of these three world class musicians results in a performance you'll enjoy and remember for a long time. They have travelled the world performing in major festivals including the Festival Interceltique in Lorient France, and concerts with the Southern Cross Pipeband in Montedvideo Uruguay. The music of The Runes will get your feet tapping or bring a tear to your eye –no matter how it makes you feel, it is music you won't forget.

The Red Hot Chili Steppers
Lindsay Lovenuk (18 yrs - Russell), Michelle Farley (17yrs-Avonmore), and Kylie O'Connell, (15yrs – Riverside South). We have been stepdancing together for the past 3 years. We enjoy performing at various events in our community and the Ottawa area. Some of our performances have included the Tattoo held in Ottawa, performances with The Bobby Lalonde Band at the Casino de Lac Leamy and Mont Tremblant, the Russell Celtic Fest, St. Patrick's Day celebrations, local Fairs, and Farmers Markets. During the summer months, we look forward to Fiddle and Stepdance Competitions which take place throughout Ontario. Over the past 8 to 10 years, we have been competing in both solo and group dance. We have recently learned to play a few jigs and reels on the fiddle.

Dukes of Haggis
Riding the popularity of emerging East Coast bands like Great Big Sea, Kilt and others... the Dukes of Haggis first came together in 2003 around a love of Celtic music (traditional and contemporary) and the idea of how much fun it might be to play a repertoire of Celtic and East Coast music. About that time, the "Dukes of Hazard" movie was coming out hence; the "Dukes of Haggis" band was born. The Dukes first performed as an acoustic trio in the spring of 2004 and have never looked back. And while the band now performs as a duo (and also plays an extended repertoire of pop, rock and contemporary music), the Celtic repertoire has always been their first love. This year, it is our privilege to perform the best of our Celtic repertoire at the Russell CelticFest.

The Wayward Sound
The Wayward Sound coalesced early in 2011. A zany blend of Traditional Celtic and Modern Folk music will have you out of your seats singing and dancing in no time. The Wayward Sound is Keith Anderson: guitar and vocals; Doug Crump: guitar, vocals, harmonica; Michael Jonz: mandolin, vocals, guitar; Olivia Pelling: fiddle, vocals; Melissa Sparling: bodhran; Vance Trudeau; whistle, accordion, mandolin. Herringbone
Herringbone was born around a campfire at Fitzroy Harbour just west of Ottawa. Herringbone will be performing a 'teaser' show at the Russell Legion Club Room the Friday night before CelticFest.

The Sons of Scotland Pipe Band
Canada's Oldest Civilian Pipe Band, Founded in 1896. The first Pipe Band to be heard in the Nation's capital on Burns night, 1896. Under the direction of Pipe Major Bethany Bisaillion, the Sons of Scotland compete at the Grade 4 and Grade 5 levels and perform in some 50 concerts and parades throughout the year. We are committed to developing the talent of each of our members, producing quality music, and having a great deal of fun. The band is proud to be affiliated with the College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Angel
Chris began performing at bars and pubs while completing his degree in performance music at the University of Windsor. Chris started out playing open mic nights at Patrick O'Ryan's Irish Public House and soon became a regular fixture at a dozen Windsor and Detroit bars. Chris has captivated crowds from university students to legionnaires, with a collection of songs that range from current top 40 rock hits, to Scottish ballads. While tending to focus on a fast-paced mix of rock and modern Celtic favourites, Chris is always up to the challenge of satisfying the requests of any crowd.

Neil McDaniel
Neil McDaniel was born in Margaree Forks, Cape Breton, in June of 1975. The Cape Breton scenery does a good job inspiring one's mind and artistic flavour and throughout high school, Neil continued to progress with music on his own terms and developed an interest in additional instruments such as the guitar, digital keyboard and harmonica.

One of Cape Breton's finest traditional fiddlers, Glenn is also a composer, song-writer, step-dancer, music instructor and published author. His music has been featured on the International TV hit series Dawson's Creek, multiple CD compilations, TV specials and independent films and DVD productions. With five recordings and multiple East Coast Music Award nominations to his credit, it's no surprise that he is one of Cape Breton's most sought-after performers and music instructors. Influenced by the Gaelic sounds of the "Mabou Coal Mines" fiddle style that is found in the Celtic Cradle of North America, Glenn's roots go deep in the traditional music of Cape Breton. Glenn Graham, along with his sister Amy and a band including some of Cape Breton's most innovative musicians, has appeared at California's Villa Montalvo, the Celtic Colours International Festival, Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Lunenburg Folk Festival, Saint John Festival By the Sea, Granville Green Concert Series, College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor Maine, the Wayne Gretzky Invitational, and numerous other venues. He performed in the first ever Cape Breton Live on Tour production, which toured Quebec and Ontario in November of 2006, with some of Cape Breton's most recognized musicians.

First Ever Oireachtas in Canada- July 2

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and the North American Gaeltacht group are hosting the first ever Oireachtas Gaeilge Cheanada, the first ever Oireachtas in Canada.

The Oireachtas in Ireland Is a huge event which celebrates Irish culture, through the Irish language: there are songs, sean nos dancing , music, storytelling and poetry. It is a competition, but all done in great fun. We are hosting our own Canadian Irish language Oireachtas on JULY 2nd at the Gaeltacht site just outside Tamworth Ontario for a day filled of fun and activities. www.anghaeltacht.ca

This celebration of our Irish heritage is open to everyone who sings sean nos style or who sings other styles of songs in Irish or is member of a Celtic choir that sings songs in Irish; anyone who does sean nos steps or Ottawa Valley steps, and those who do traditional Irish set dances can do the Clare Lancers are welcome ; as are those who plays the uillean pipes or the harp, or who are members of a ceili band, the band can compete, and finally anyone who can recite poetry, tell a story in Irish, or who have written articles, poetry or stories in the Irish language.

All learners of the Irish language are welcome are strongly encouraged to compete as this event is open all levels of ability from beginners to fluent speakers. If you don't do any of these but are looking for a way to celebrate your Irish culture, come and join us in the audience.

Celebrate Bloomsday at Saint Brigids Centre on 16 June 2011. This is the 3rd annual presentation of this event. They want you to dress up like it's 1904, too! The event is FREE and donations go to help the Centre. Glenn Graham fiddle workshop and concert, Perth ON, 11 June 2011

Fiddle Workshop and Concert 9:30am-4pm: Glenn Graham - One of Cape Breton's finest traditional fiddlers, is also a composer, songwriter, step-dancer, music instructor and published author. With five recordings and multiple East Coast Music Award nominations to his credit, it's no surprise that Glenn Graham is one of Cape Breton's most sought-after performers and music instructors. Glenn, along with Vic Maltby will be teaching at a Fiddling & Songwriting Workshop in Perth, ON. Fiddle workshops will be taught at an advanced beginner and at an intermediate level, open to players age 10 to 75+. Fiddlers will have the opportunity to learn from both teachers. Songwriting workshop lead by Jenny Whitely. Following the workshops, there will be a Concert at the Myriad Theatre, from 2:30 till 4pm, which is open to the public, admission is by donation. The Concert will feature the instructors, the workshop participants, and a special appearance by The Blue Skies Community Fiddle Orchestra. Fiddle workshops will be held at the old shoe factory Sherbrooke St. upstairs in the Perth School of Dance studios. Song-writing workshop and Concert will be held in the Myriad Theatre downstairs. Lunch is available for purchase at the Factory Grind (next door) or bring a bag lunch. Cost for the workshop is $25. Maximum 15 participants in each workshop. Questions?
